Patty Melt Recipe

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

There’s something irresistibly comforting about a patty melt. Imagine a crispy, buttery crust giving way to a juicy beef patty and melted cheese – it’s the ultimate diner delight. But why wait for late-night cravings when you can make this classic at home?

I discovered my favorite patty melt recipe during a rainy weekend cookout that didn’t go as planned. With the grill out of commission, I turned to a cast-iron skillet and some leftover rye bread. The result was a delicious surprise that’s quickly become a family favorite.

This recipe takes the classic patty melt and makes it even better. We use caramelized onions cooked slowly to bring out their sweet flavor, and a special mix of ground beef to get just the right balance of fat and lean meat.

A touch of Dijon mustard adds a subtle kick, while sharp cheddar and creamy Swiss cheese create a gooey, melt-in-your-mouth experience.

And the best part? It takes less than 25 minutes to whip up. So, if you’re ready to enjoy patty melt perfection, give this recipe a try and see how it transforms your meal. Don’t forget to share your own twists on this classic in the comments!

Why I Love This Recipe?

  • I’ve tested countless patty melt variations, and this one consistently delivers that perfect balance of flavors and textures – it’s my go-to comfort food on busy weeknights.
  • The method for caramelizing onions in this recipe is foolproof. Even if you’ve struggled with burning them before, you’ll nail it this time.
  • I love how easily this recipe scales up for entertaining. I’ve served these at game day parties, and they’re always a hit (plus, you can prep components ahead of time).
  • Surprisingly, leftovers reheat beautifully. A quick zap in the microwave followed by a minute in a hot skillet brings back that crispy exterior.
  • This patty melt has become my secret weapon for picky eaters. The familiar flavors win over even the most burger-averse family members.
