Sharing is caring!

Calling all sweet tooths! It’s your friend in the kitchen, Austin, and today we’re whipping up something easy and festive for the holidays – Christmas Crack Recipe!

I have loved this recipe since I was a kid but the only difference is that earlier my Aunt used to make this recipe for me whenever I visited her but over a period of time I learned this recipe from her and now I make it myself.

This treat combines salty crackers with a gooey, caramelized topping and a rich chocolate layer. It’s perfect for sharing at parties or simply enjoying at home.

Get ready to impress everyone with your baking skills – this recipe is as simple as it is delicious! I also tried Spotted Dick Recipe recently which I loved very much and you may also do. So just don’t forget to give it a try when your sweet tooth will give you a call now.

What Is Christmas Crack?

This candy involves saltine crackers covered in toffee and chocolate on top. It’s simple to make without needing a candy thermometer or precise measurements. Just cook the toffee until it sets. The toffee isn’t hard; it has a firm yet soft-sugary texture.

Equipment

  • 1 Saucepan You'll need a medium-sized saucepan to melt the butter and brown sugar together to make the caramel sauce.
  • 1 Oven You'll need an oven to bake the Christmas Crack, typically preheated to 350°F (175°C).
  • 1 Baking sheet A standard baking sheet or cookie sheet is necessary for baking the crackers and caramel mixture in the oven.
  • 1 Parchment paper or aluminum foil This is used to line the baking sheet, making it easier to remove the Christmas Crack once it's cooled and hardened.
  • 1 Mixing Spoon or Spatula A utensil for stirring the caramel sauce as it cooks and for spreading it evenly over the crackers on the baking sheet.

Ingredients

  • 1 40 – 50 Saltine Crackers one sleeve or about 40-50 crackers
  • 1 2 Sticks Unsalted Butter
  • 1 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 2 Cups Chocolate Chips semisweet or milk chocolate
  • 1 1 Cup Chopped Nuts such as pecans or almonds
  • 1 1 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1 1 tsp Sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  • Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet, covering the entire surface. Set aside.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Once the butter is melted, add the brown sugar to the saucepan. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.
  • Once the mixture is boiling, let it cook for about 3-5 minutes, stirring continuously, until it thickens and becomes a caramel-like consistency. Be careful not to burn it.
  • Pour the hot caramel mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, using a spatula to spread it out if needed.
  • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 5-7 minutes, or until the caramel layer is bubbly.
  • Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel layer. Let them sit for a few minutes to soften.
  • Once the chocolate chips have softened, use a spatula or the back of a spoon to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the caramel layer.
  • If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts, sprinkles, or sea salt over the melted chocolate for added flavor and decoration.
  • Allow the Christmas Crack to cool completely at room temperature until the chocolate layer has hardened.
  • Once cooled and hardened, break the Christmas Crack into pieces or cut it into squares.
  • Serve and enjoy! Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature.

Time For Some Tips!

  1. Choose for quality ingredients: Using high-quality butter, chocolate, and crackers can significantly enhance the flavor and texture of your Christmas Crack.
  2. Line your baking sheet: Make cleanup a breeze by lining your baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil before assembling your crackers.
  3. Keep an eye on the caramel: Stir your caramel sauce constantly and monitor it closely to prevent burning. Caramel can quickly go from golden to burnt if left unattended.
  4. Add toppings while the chocolate is warm: Sprinkle nuts, sprinkles, or other toppings over the melted chocolate layer while it’s still warm to ensure they stick well.
  5. Allow it to cool completely: Let your Christmas Crack cool fully at room temperature or in the refrigerator before breaking it into pieces. This helps it set properly and prevents crumbling.
  6. Store properly: Keep your Christmas Crack fresh by storing it in an airtight container at room temperature. If you prefer a firmer texture, refrigerate it, especially in warmer climates.
  7. Experiment with variations: Get creative and customize your Christmas Crack with different chocolates, nuts, or toppings. A sprinkle of sea salt can add an extra dimension of flavor.
  8. Share the joy: Spread holiday cheer by sharing your homemade Christmas Crack with friends and family. Whether as a homemade gift or a party treat, it’s sure to be a hit during the festive season!
